Geh doch dahin wo der Pfeffer wächst (Go where the pepper grows)
With many sayings the origin can be traced back far and often there is an exciting story behind it. Todays saying (proverb) is...
...Go where the pepper grows (in German: Geh doch dahin wo der Pfeffer wächst)
Sometimes you wish someone to where the pepper grows - and usually when the person is not wanted or you just do not want to see him.
Since the pepper came from far away and many people did not know where it came from, they wished unpleasant people to go where the pepper grows.
After all, pepper originally comes from India . Today, travelers can reach India quickly and easily by plane, but in the past the country seemed unreachable.
It came into being at the time when the sea route to India was discovered and a rich trade in spices, especially pepper, was established.
Pepper was a really expensive spice back then. Because it had to be transported from far away to Germany. That was really expensive. Kings gave pepper away like precious stones back then. And even the Romans loved pepper.
One of the first proofs of the use of the saying was Thomas Murner in 1512, who mentioned it in the "Narrenbeschwörung" (Fool's Incantation).
Today, travelers can reach India quickly and easily by plane, but in the past the country seemed unreachable. Why not go soon again to where the pepper grows.
Or how the Germans say: "Geh doch dahin wo der Pfeffer wächst."
